The Buried Village
This is a "living museum" on the site of Te Wairoa Village, buried under the heavy ash and boiling mud of the Lake Tarawera eruption of June 10 1886. This was New Zealand's greatest natural disaster. For more than 4 terrifying hours rocks, ash and boiling hot mud bombarded the peaceful village. 150 people were killed. The nearby pink and white terraces were totally destroyed. This history is brought to life with a visit to today's Buried Village.
